For a personal branding photoshoot, bring 4–6 outfit options in timeless colours — white, black, beige, brown, and navy — plus one piece that reflects your brand’s colours or personality. Well-fitted, comfortable clothes photograph best. At BaLuca Media in Sydney, we review every option together on shoot day and choose what works.
“What do I wear?” is the question every client asks — usually somewhere between booking the shoot and mild panic. Here’s the honest answer, from hundreds of Sydney branding sessions.
Start with timeless colours
Build your outfits around colours that photograph beautifully in both colour and black and white: white, black, beige, brown, and navy. These are timeless, flattering on camera, and they won’t date your photos in a year — important when these images will live on your website and LinkedIn for a long time.
Then bring your brand in on top of that base: a jacket in your brand colour, a scarf, jewellery, or accessories that echo your website’s palette and vibe. Your photos should look like they belong on your website — because that’s exactly where they’re going.
Should your outfits match your brand colours?
It’s your shoot — but our advice is always the same: bring at least something that connects to your brand. That doesn’t mean dressing head-to-toe in your logo colour. A matching accessory, a complementary tone, or even just the right vibe is enough to make the final images feel cohesive with your website and socials.
The outfit formula we use on every shoot
For your 2–3 outfit changes, this is the structure that gives maximum variety from one session:
- A light top and a dark top — instantly doubles the range of your gallery
- A suit or smart-casual jacket — your authority look for headshots and LinkedIn
- A casual t-shirt or relaxed layer — the approachable, human side of your brand
- For women: a smart-casual dress — versatile across website banners and lifestyle shots
- One personal piece — something that reflects your brand, your personality, or simply feels like you
The mistakes we see most on shoot day
After hundreds of sessions, the same issues come up again and again:
- Clothes that are too big or too small. Fit matters more than fashion on camera — ill-fitting clothes create shadows and bulges that no editing should have to fix.
- Uncomfortable outfits. If you can’t move and breathe in it, it shows in your face and posture.
- The favourite outfit that doesn’t match the brand. We love that jumper too — but if your website is minimal and navy, the neon print won’t fit the story.
- Brand-new shoes or unworn clothes. Wear everything once before the shoot.
- Busy patterns and large logos. They pull attention away from your face — and your face is the brand.
“I have nothing to wear”
You’re not alone — we hear it constantly, and it’s never actually true. Before your shoot you’ll receive our preparation guide covering outfits, grooming, and props. If your wardrobe genuinely needs reinforcements, we’ll point you to the right shops, outfit hire options, or recommend a stylist.
And here’s the part that takes the pressure off completely: bring more than you need. We always ask clients to pack extra options, because on shoot day we review everything together, experiment, and choose what photographs best. You don’t have to get it right alone — that’s what we’re there for.
