You don’t need to be photogenic to get natural photos — you need a fully guided session. At BaLuca Media in Sydney, every pose, hand position, and movement is directed by the photographer, so nothing is left to guesswork. Preparation, a relaxed start, and open communication do the rest.
“I hate being photographed.” If that’s you, you’re in the majority of our clients — and this article is written for you.
First truth: nobody knows what to do with their hands
Hands are the most awkward part of being photographed, and no one — literally no one — naturally knows what to do with them. So we don’t expect you to.
Every pose is guided. Where to look, how to stand, what to do with your hands, when to move. And throughout the session we keep asking one question: how does this feel? Because a pose that photographs well but feels wrong isn’t you — and these photos need to be you.
What actually happens in the first 15 minutes
We don’t start with the camera. We start with a conversation — your kids, your business, your outfit, the launch these photos are for. Whatever topic makes your shoulders drop. Then warm-up shots that don’t count for anything, a few jokes, maybe a story about a client who stood exactly where you’re standing feeling exactly what you’re feeling.
Movement does the rest. Walking shots, turning, adjusting a jacket — natural moments beat stiff poses every time, so we build the session around motion, not statues.
The switch happens for everyone
There’s a moment in every session when a client switches from tense to natural. For some it takes ten minutes; for others it comes after the first outfit change or the first look at the back of the camera. We’re all different — some people need longer to trust and relax, others feel the camera quickly.
But here’s what years of sessions have taught us: the switch happens for everyone. Your only job is to let it.
One client arrived after a traffic jam, in terrible weather, soaked and stressed — she’d already written the session off before walking in the door and expected nothing from herself. So we didn’t shoot. We made hot tea, talked about everything except photos, went through outfits slowly — and only then picked up the camera. The final gallery? Some of the most relaxed, glowing images we’ve delivered. The session bends around you, not the other way.
What to say when your inner critic shows up
“I look terrible.” “My smile is fake.” Mid-shoot self-criticism is normal, and we don’t ignore it — we answer it. Sometimes with a client story, sometimes with the back of the camera: seeing your own images ten minutes in, looking better than you imagined, silences the inner critic faster than any pep talk.
Secret weapon: the hair and makeup chair
Your session starts in the makeup chair — and honestly, our hair and makeup artist doubles as a psychologist. That hour is where you get to feel special, boost your confidence, and emotionally arrive at the shoot. By the time the camera comes out, half the nerves have already dissolved.
How to arrive calm: the night-before checklist
Prepare everything the night before — outfits packed, route checked, nothing left for the morning
Skip alcohol and spicy food the evening before — both show on camera
Sleep well — rest photographs better than any concealer
Hair and nails done in advance, not the morning of
Arrive a few minutes early — no rushing, no stress, just walk in fresh, calm, and ready
You don’t need to be photogenic
You’re not a professional model — and nobody expects you to be one. You just need to trust the process, get comfortable, follow the guidance, and tell us how you feel along the way. The more relaxed and open you are, the easier the experience becomes — and the more you’ll love the results.
